India’s basmati rice exports witnessed a significant increase in the 2024–25 financial year, recording a ₹1,923 crore rise over the previous fiscal, even amid geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East. Furthermore, the official data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) shows that the export value reached 50,312 crore, which represents a gain of 3.97% over last year.

Surge in Volume and Global Reach

In volume terms, India exported approximately 60.65 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of basmati rice in 2024–25, an increase of 8.23 LMT or 15.7% compared to 52.42 LMT in 2023–24. The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) reported that India expanded its global footprint by shipping basmati rice to 154 countries, up from 150 countries in the previous fiscal.

Top Importing Countries in FY 2024–25

Saudi Arabia retained its position as the largest importer of Indian basmati rice by volume, purchasing 11.73 LMT. It was followed by:

  • Iraq: 9.05 LMT
  • Iran: 8.55 LMT
  • Yemen: 3.92 LMT
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE): 3.89 LMT
  • United States: 2.74 LMT
  • United Kingdom: 1.80 LMT
  • Kuwait: 1.75 LMT
  • Oman: 1.49 LMT
  • Qatar: 1.24 LMT

Additionally, these ten countries accounted for a large share of India’s total basmati rice exports in both volume and value.

Export Value by Country

In terms of export revenue (in rupees), Saudi Arabia was the top buyer, contributing ₹10,190.73 crore. Other major importers include:

  • Iraq: ₹7,201 crore
  • Iran: ₹6,374 crore
  • UAE: ₹3,089 crore
  • Yemen: ₹3,038.56 crore
  • United States: ₹2,849 crore
  • United Kingdom: ₹1,613.36 crore
  • Kuwait: ₹1,518.8 crore
  • Oman: ₹1,223 crore
  • Qatar: ₹1,040 crore

Impact of Regional Conflicts

The last quarter of the fiscal year proved challenging for Indian basmati exports due to tensions between Iran and Israel, but the overall performance remained strong. Several shipments were delayed or disrupted due to geopolitical risks, but higher demand in the earlier part of the year helped boost total figures.

Outlook for 2025–26

With a stable monsoon forecast and projected increase in rice output, Indian basmati rice exports are expected to remain strong in the next fiscal year. However, exporters remain cautious amid ongoing regional conflicts and currency fluctuations, which could influence trade dynamics.

India’s basmati rice export sector has shown impressive resilience, achieving higher earnings and expanding its global presence despite external challenges. India’s basmati rice continues to be popular in the Middle East and Western countries, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the rice on the world stage.
