India’s Rice Production Forecast to Hit Record 151 MT in 2025–26

India rice export forecast 2025–26 with Indian flag and graph highlighting 151 MT rice production target.

India is on track to achieve its highest-ever rice production in the 2025–26 crop season (September 2025–August 2026), backed by strong monsoons, favorable growing conditions, and robust government support. This optimistic outlook aligns with international forecasts predicting a global grain production record, driven by major contributors across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Global and Domestic Forecasts Signal All-Time High

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts India’s rice production for 2025–26 to top 151 million tonnes (milled basis). Furthermore, this marks an 11% increase over the previous year and a 1% increase over the five-year average. Approximately 51.0 million hectares will be harvested this year, matching last year’s record and reflecting a 7% increase over the five-year trend. Yields are also expected to reach new highs, averaging 4.44 tonnes per hectare (rough basis).

Meanwhile, the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has echoed similar optimism, citing favorable conditions and strong sowing progress across Asia, including India. The International Grains Council (IGC) also expects global rice production to reach a new peak of 541 million tonnes in the upcoming season.

India’s Foodgrain Performance Strengthens

India’s Ministry of Agriculture recently estimated the 2024–25 rice output at 149.07 million tonnes, up from earlier projections. With early sowing reports indicating healthy progress in 2025, the country may comfortably surpass even that milestone. The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) under USDA confirmed that planting activity is currently ahead of schedule due to optimal soil moisture and irrigation conditions.

India’s wheat production is also poised for continued growth. The USDA projects wheat output at 117.5 million tonnes for 2025–26, matching the Indian government’s current forecast. With improved yields and a larger harvested area (32.9 million hectares). Wheat cultivation is benefiting from enhanced soil conditions and government procurement incentives.

Favorable Climate Conditions Driving Growth

The successful harvest outlook for both rice and wheat is largely attributed to consistent and widespread rainfall, particularly during the rabi season. Remote sensing data from satellite observations between October 2024 and April 2025. Confirmed healthy crop progress and irrigation reserves in major agricultural states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

Furthermore, these conditions, combined with favorable policy measures like higher minimum support prices, encouraged timely planting and crop development. The USDA noted that farmers were able to complete the wheat harvest under ideal conditions.

Rising Government Stocks and Global Trade Dynamics

As of June 1, 2025, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) reported record rice stocks of 37.99 million tonnes, with an additional 32.26 million tonnes of unmilled paddy. Similarly, wheat stocks reached a three-year high of 36.93 million tonnes, reinforcing India’s food security buffer.

India’s rabi and zaid rice harvests have concluded, while global rice trade continues to experience sluggish demand due to high inventories among key buyers. However, experts suggest a possible revival in demand from July onward.

Conclusion

India’s position as a global agricultural powerhouse is set to strengthen further with back-to-back record harvests projected for both rice and wheat. Favorable climate conditions, robust government procurement, and strong sowing momentum are expected to drive these gains.

As the 2025–26 season progresses, continued monitoring of weather trends and international trade signals will be crucial in shaping the next phase of India’s agricultural success story.
