India has reached a historic milestone in global agriculture by emerging as the world’s largest rice producer, overtaking China in total output. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that India’s rice production has touched 150.18 million tonnes, exceeding China’s estimated 145.28 million tonnes.

The minister made the announcement in New Delhi during the release of 184 newly developed crop varieties by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). These varieties include cereals, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, and fodder crops. The development reflects India’s growing focus on productivity, sustainability, and climate resilience.

Strong Seed Innovation Drives Output Growth

Officials confirmed that the newly released varieties offer higher yields, pest resistance, and climate resilience. These traits help farmers manage changing weather conditions more effectively. The agriculture minister stated that India has moved from food scarcity to food surplus through scientific research and better seed access.

Since 1969, India has officially notified more than 7,200 crop varieties. In recent years alone, authorities have approved over 3,200 high-yielding varieties. These approvals have strengthened farm productivity and improved national food security.
